In 1960, American Standard Inc., recognized that partnerships with transportation companies were essential to maximize customer service while keeping distribution costs under control. To take full advantage of these benefits, a private fleet was established with the intent to fully integrate the inbound movement of raw materials and the outbound movement of finished goods with the manufacturing process.
The private fleet evolved into Amstan Trucking which was incorporated in 1974. As a for hire contract carrier regulated by the Interstate Commerce Commission, Amstan was able to offer its services to companies outside the American Standard family. This additional business both complemented American Standard business by providing lane balance and supplementing the internal business which enabled Amstan to grow.
In 1982, Amstan obtained authority from the ICC allowing operation as a common carrier in all 48 states for shippers of general commodities.
In 1991, Amstan started a flatbed operation with headquarters in Carlisle, PA. Later in the same year, Amstan began routing, in addition to hauling, freight for American Standard from its distribution center in Louisville, KY.
In 1995, the expansion continued as Amstan added equipment to increase its fleet size to include over 200 tractors and 400 flatbed and high cube van trailers. An evolution occurred as Amstan Trucking became Amstan Logistics. With the inception of our Less Than Truckload, partials and intermodal programs, Amstan was in a position to handle any size shipment from one pallet to a full truckload. Our marketing scope also changed. We could now evaluate an account's total transportation and distribution requirements and design a program to meet these needs.
In late 1998, to expand globally Amstan joined forces with Edward's Logistics, which is a 100% owned and proactive service operation located in the United Kingdom. Edward's offers complete Logistics Services for all of Europe, this includes all countries within the EC, from Eastern Europe to Western Europe. Our logistics service groups in both Hamilton, Ohio and Hull, England (a major ferry port to and from Europe) can provide complete logistical service for transatlantic and surface freight needs to and from virtually anywhere in the world.
We have continued to add services an now offer a complete range of transportation and distribution options for our customers. From LTL to full load, domestic to international, standard delivery to expedited, van, flat or reefer, Amstan has the capability of designing a logistics program to meet your specific unmet needs.
